Four-Day Work Week Statistics 2026
This page collects figures on the four-day work week: what happened to productivity, revenue, retention and wellbeing in organised trials, how many employers offer one, and how much workers want it. It covers pilots run by 4 Day Week Global and Autonomy in the UK, Germany, Portugal and Australia, the peer-reviewed Boston College analysis, government programmes in Iceland, Tokyo, Scotland and South Cambridgeshire, and survey data from Gallup, SHRM, Owl Labs and others, alongside official hours data from BLS, ONS and Eurostat. Most trial figures date from 2022 to 2026; a few survey baselines are older and are labeled by year.

Research overview
What the numbers say
The trial evidence points in one direction. In the UK's 2022 pilot of 61 companies, 92% kept the four-day week at the end and 89% were still running it a year later, according to Autonomy. The follow-up UK pilot run by the 4 Day Week Foundation with Boston College in 2024 and 2025 kept all 17 organisations. Germany's pilot was less clear-cut, with 73% continuing and 20% returning to five days, and 4 Day Week Global reports that 70% still used some form of reduced hours two years on. In Portugal only 4 of 41 firms reverted, per Henley Business School.
Wellbeing is where the data are strongest. The Nature Human Behaviour paper by Wen Fan, Juliet Schor and colleagues found improvements in burnout, job satisfaction and health across 2,896 employees at 141 organisations, a pattern absent from control companies. UK pilot employees reported less burnout (71% in 2022, 62% in 2024 to 2025), German participants logged 89 fewer stress minutes a week on smartwatches, and in Portugal the share of workers struggling with work-life balance fell from 50% to 16%.
Business results are mostly stable rather than dramatic. UK pilot revenue rose 1.4% during the trial, and Australian firms studied in Humanities and Social Sciences Communications said productivity rose or held steady. The clearer gains are in staffing: the UK pilot saw 57% fewer leavers and 65% fewer sick days, and South Cambridgeshire District Council recorded over 120% more job applications and over 40% fewer leavers, according to the University of Salford.
Adoption outside pilots remains thin. SHRM found 9% of US organisations had a four-day week in 2023, Indeed found about 0.3% of US job postings advertised one, and Gallup found 8% of US workers worked four days a week. Demand is far higher: 77% of US workers told Gallup it would help their wellbeing, 69% told Talker Research they could do their job in 32 hours, and Owl Labs found workers would give up 8% of salary for it. Government action is growing but uneven, from Iceland, where 86% of workers won shorter hours or the right to them, to Tokyo's optional four-day week for city staff and Scotland's decision not to extend its successful pilot.

What these figures suggest
Continuation is the most consistent result across trials. In the UK's 2022 pilot, 56 of 61 companies kept the policy at the end, and 54 were still running it a year later; every one of the 17 organisations in the 2024 to 2025 UK pilot continued. Germany and Portugal show more drop-off: 20% of German organisations went back to five days, and four of 41 Portuguese firms did the same. Participants self-select and many are small professional-services firms, so these rates describe motivated volunteers rather than the average employer.

What these figures suggest
Wellbeing gains are the best-documented outcome. The largest peer-reviewed analysis, by Boston College researchers in Nature Human Behaviour, followed 2,896 employees at 141 organisations and found gains in burnout, job satisfaction and mental and physical health that did not appear in control companies. National pilots report the same direction: 71% of UK 2022 participants and 62% of UK 2024 to 2025 participants reported less burnout. Most measures are self-reported by employees who chose to take part, so effect sizes may be smaller in mandatory or less enthusiastic settings.

ResearchHenley Business SchoolResults from Portugal's government-backed 4-day week trial releasedJul 2024
What these figures suggest
Lower quitting and absence are where the business case is strongest. The UK pilot recorded 57% fewer leavers and 65% fewer sick days than a year earlier, and South Cambridgeshire District Council saw job applications more than double while leavers fell by over 40%. Workers also attach a large value to the extra day: Portuguese participants valued it at 28% of salary. These comparisons are against prior periods at the same employers, not randomized controls, and labour-market conditions changed over the same years.

What these figures suggest
Public employers have produced some of the longest-running evidence. Iceland's 2015 to 2019 trials covered about 2,500 workers and led to contracts giving 86% of the workforce shorter hours or the right to them, although most Icelandic cuts were to 35 or 36 hours rather than a full four-day week. Tokyo's metropolitan government made a four-day week option available to its staff from April 2025 using flextime, while keeping total hours unchanged. Scotland's pilot showed productivity gains, yet ministers decided not to extend 32 hours across the public sector, so positive results do not guarantee adoption.

What these figures suggest
Outside pilots, a true four-day week with no pay cut is still rare. SHRM found 9% of US organisations had implemented one in 2023, Indeed found only about 0.3% of US job postings mentioned a four-day week, and Gallup found 8% of US workers worked four days a week in 2022. Many of these are compressed 40-hour weeks rather than reduced hours. UK numbers vary widely by definition: Henley's survey counted 65% of businesses using a four-day week for some staff, while the stricter 4 Day Week Foundation accreditation lists a few hundred employers.

What these figures suggest
Demand is high and fairly stable across surveys. Gallup found 77% of US workers expected a four-day week to help their wellbeing, Owl Labs found 68% would trade some pay for one, and Talker Research found 69% of employed Americans think they could do their job in 32 hours. Younger workers are consistently the most enthusiastic. Stated willingness to trade pay is usually higher than real behavior, and some surveys ask about a compressed 40-hour week, so wording matters when comparing them.

ResearchHenley Business SchoolResults from Portugal's government-backed 4-day week trial releasedJul 2024
What these figures suggest
Average hours give context for what a four-day week would change. The typical US private-sector workweek is 34.4 hours because the average includes part-time staff, and the EU average is 35.9 hours, already down an hour from 2015. In pilots, actual hours fell less than the headline cut: UK participants went from 38 to 34 hours rather than to 32, and Portuguese workers from 41.6 to 36.5 hours. A four-day week usually means about a 10% to 20% cut in hours for full-time staff, not the full 20% implied by dropping a day.
About these figures
We chose figures from the organisations that ran or evaluated each trial (Autonomy, 4 Day Week Global, the 4 Day Week Foundation, the University of Cambridge, the University of Salford, Henley Business School), peer-reviewed research (Nature Human Behaviour, Humanities and Social Sciences Communications), government sources (Tokyo Metropolitan Government, BLS, ONS, Eurostat) and firms that publish their own survey data (Gallup, SHRM, YouGov, Indeed Hiring Lab, Talker Research, Owl Labs). Pilot participants volunteer, are often small professional-services firms, and most outcomes are self-reported, so results may not carry over to all employers. Definitions differ: some surveys count compressed 40-hour weeks, while pilots cut hours with no loss of pay. A few baselines (SHRM 2019, Henley 2021, Iceland 2015 to 2019) are older and are labeled by year.
Every figure was taken from the publisher's own page, together with the sentence it appears in, and that sentence is re-checked against the source before each update. Where a survey covers a specific group, the figure says so. Read the methodology. Spotted a problem? Email editorial@mojolin.com.
Frequently asked questions
+Do four-day work week trials work?
Most organisations that try one keep it. In the UK's 2022 pilot, 56 of 61 companies (92%) continued, and all 17 organisations in the 2024 to 2025 UK pilot did the same (Autonomy, 4 Day Week Foundation). Germany's 2024 pilot was weaker, with 73% continuing and 20% returning to five days (4 Day Week Global).
+Does a four-day week reduce productivity or revenue?
Published trials have not found a drop. UK pilot revenue rose 1.4% on average during the trial (University of Cambridge), 21 of 24 council services at South Cambridgeshire improved or held steady (University of Salford), and none of 15 Australian firms reported lower productivity (Humanities and Social Sciences Communications).
+How much does a four-day week reduce burnout?
71% of UK 2022 pilot employees and 62% of UK 2024 to 2025 pilot employees reported less burnout. A Nature Human Behaviour study of 2,896 employees at 141 organisations found improvements in burnout and mental and physical health that did not appear in control companies.
+How many companies offer a four-day work week?
Few, when defined strictly. SHRM found 9% of US organisations had implemented a four-day workweek in 2023, and Indeed found about 0.3% of US job postings advertised one. In the UK, 266 employers are accredited by the 4 Day Week Foundation for cutting hours with no pay loss.
+How many workers want a four-day work week?
Most. Gallup found 77% of US workers expected a four-day week to help their wellbeing, Talker Research found 69% of employed Americans think they could do their job in 32 hours, and Owl Labs found 68% would give up some pay for one.
+Which governments have tried a four-day week?
Iceland ran trials from 2015 to 2019 that led to 86% of workers gaining shorter hours or the right to them (Autonomy). Portugal funded a trial of 41 companies, Scotland piloted 32 hours for 259 public staff, and the Tokyo Metropolitan Government has offered staff a four-day week option since April 2025.
