Gender Pay Gap Statistics 2026

This page brings together current figures on the gender pay gap: how much women earn compared with men in the US, UK, EU and Australia, and how the gap changes with age, race, parenthood, occupation and education. It also covers pay transparency laws in the US, UK and EU, and the difference between the raw gap and the gap for the same job. Figures come from national statistical offices, government reporting services and research organizations, and most describe 2024 to 2026.

What the numbers say

The gender pay gap in the US has hovered between about 80% and 84% for more than a decade. BLS measured women's median weekly pay at 83.4% of men's in the third quarter of 2026, and the Census Bureau's annual series rose to 83.9% in 2025 from 80.6% in 2024, as women's earnings grew 3.2% and men's were flat. BLS's own annual series shows how slow the long-run change has become: from 62% in 1979 to 81% by 2005, then within an 81% to 84% band since 2010. Pew's broader hourly measure, which includes part-time workers, puts women at 85% of men's pay in 2024.

Age and parenthood explain much of what remains. Women under 35 earn close to what men earn, 88% to 95% depending on the measure, while women 55 and older earned 78.1% of men's pay in late 2026. The UK shows the same shape, with a full-time gap of 0.3% for those aged 18 to 21 and 11% or more after 50. BLS data show fathers working full time earn $1,469 a week against $1,179 for men without children, a premium that has no close match among mothers.

Occupation and sorting matter as much as pay for the same job. Payscale finds women earn 82 cents per dollar on a raw basis but 99 cents when job title and other factors are held equal. BLS shows half of men in professional jobs work in computing and engineering, against 12% of women, and Census and ONS data show the widest gaps in construction, skilled trades and production work. Among people with advanced degrees, the top 10% of men earn at least $4,985 a week against $3,572 for women.

Outside the US, the UK full-time gap fell to 6.8% in April 2026 and the EU average stood at 11.1% in 2024, with country gaps from below zero in Luxembourg to 18.8% in Estonia. The WEF puts the global economic participation gap at 61% closed and estimates 123 years to full parity. Pay transparency is the main policy response: the EU directive took effect in national law in June 2026 with employer reporting from 2027, UK employers with 250 or more staff already report, and about 53% of US job postings now show pay, although an estimated 24% of covered ads still do not comply.

What these figures suggest

The two main US measures put women's pay at roughly 83% to 84% of men's for full-time workers. BLS uses median weekly earnings from the monthly Current Population Survey, while the Census Bureau uses annual earnings of people who worked full time all year, so the two series move differently from year to year. Census recorded a jump from 80.6% to 83.9% between 2024 and 2025 because women's median earnings rose and men's did not, but a single year's move is partly noise. Pew's measure, which adds part-time workers and uses hourly pay, shows a smaller gap, with women at 85% of men's pay.

    Link

What these figures suggest

The gap is small for workers in their twenties and widens sharply from the mid-thirties onward, which BLS, Pew and the ONS all observe. The usual explanation is the timing of children: the gap opens around the ages when many women have them, and fathers out-earn men without children by a wide margin. Gaps between women and men are also smaller within Black and Hispanic groups than within White and Asian groups, mostly because Black and Hispanic men earn less than White and Asian men, not because women in those groups are paid more.

What these figures suggest

Men earn more than women within almost every occupation group, and the gap tends to be widest in the best-paid and most male-dominated fields. Sorting also matters: BLS finds that half of men in professional occupations work in computing, math, architecture or engineering, against 12% of women, and those are among the highest-paid professional jobs. Education raises pay for both sexes, and women's real earnings with a degree have grown twice as fast as men's since 1979, yet the gap at the top of the distribution remains wide.

What these figures suggest

The ONS headline measure, median hourly pay excluding overtime for full-time employees, fell to 6.8% in April 2026 and has more than halved since 2001. The figure for all employees is almost twice as high, at 12.3%, because women are far more likely to work part time and part-time jobs pay less per hour. Like the US, the UK gap is close to zero for young workers and opens up after 40, and it varies by place, from below 1% in Scotland to the highest levels in London. ONS figures for 2026 are provisional.

What these figures suggest

Eurostat's unadjusted gap compares average gross hourly earnings and put the EU at 11.1% in 2024, with national figures spread from slightly negative in Luxembourg to almost 19% in Estonia. Low gaps do not always mean equal treatment: where few women work, those who do are often highly educated, which can make the average gap look small. Public sector gaps are lower in most EU countries because pay follows published grids. In Australia, the measure matters a great deal: WGEA's total remuneration gap for private employers, which includes bonuses and part-time pay, is close to double the ABS base-salary gap.

Pay is one part of the World Economic Forum's Global Gender Gap Index, which also scores education, health and political representation. Economic participation, which includes income and wage equality, is the second-widest gap of the four, at 61% closed, behind only political empowerment. At the 2006 to 2025 pace, the WEF estimates full parity is 123 years away. The United Nations, drawing on ILO estimates, puts the global pay gap at around 20%, well above the gaps measured in the US, EU and UK.

What these figures suggest

Pay transparency rules are spreading quickly. EU member states had to write the Pay Transparency Directive into national law by June 2026, with the first gender pay reports from large employers due in 2027, and a growing number of US states require salary ranges in job ads. Compliance is incomplete: New York Fed researchers estimate about a quarter of covered US ads still leave pay out. Payscale's data also show why the raw gap and the like-for-like gap differ so much: once job title and other factors are held equal, women earn 99 cents per dollar, so most of the raw gap reflects differences in jobs and seniority rather than unequal pay for the same role.

Measures differ: BLS compares median weekly pay of full-time workers, Census compares annual earnings of full-time, year-round workers, Pew and the ONS use hourly pay, Eurostat uses average hourly pay, and WGEA includes bonuses and part-time pay. Gaps from different sources should not be compared directly. Most official figures are unadjusted, meaning they do not hold job, hours or experience constant; Payscale's controlled figure does, using its own salary survey sample. ONS 2026 estimates are provisional.

Every figure was taken from the publisher's own page, together with the sentence it appears in, and that sentence is re-checked against the source before each update. Where a survey covers a specific group, the figure says so. Read the methodology. Spotted a problem? Email editorial@mojolin.com.

Frequently asked questions

+How big is the gender pay gap in the US?

BLS reported that women working full time earned 83.4% of men's median weekly earnings in the third quarter of 2026. The Census Bureau's annual measure for full-time, year-round workers was 83.9% in 2025, and Pew's hourly measure including part-time workers was 85% in 2024.

+Is the gender pay gap closing?

Slowly. BLS data show women's earnings rose from 62% of men's in 1979 to 81% by 2005, but have stayed between 81% and 84% since 2010. The UK full-time gap fell from 16.4% in 2001 to 6.8% in 2026, and the WEF estimates global parity is 123 years away.

+What is the difference between the raw and the controlled gender pay gap?

The raw or unadjusted gap compares all women's pay with all men's pay, while the controlled gap compares women and men in the same job with similar characteristics. Payscale's 2026 data show a raw gap of 82 cents on the dollar and a controlled gap of 99 cents, so most of the raw gap comes from differences in jobs, seniority and hours.

+What is the gender pay gap in the UK and the EU?

The ONS put the UK gap for full-time employees at 6.8% in April 2026 and at 12.3% for all employees. Eurostat measured an EU average of 11.1% in 2024, ranging from negative 0.8% in Luxembourg to 18.8% in Estonia.

+Which employers have to report their gender pay gap?

In Great Britain, employers with 250 or more employees must publish gender pay gap data every year. Under the EU Pay Transparency Directive, employers with at least 250 workers report annually from June 2027, those with 150 to 249 every three years from 2027, and those with 100 to 149 every three years from 2031.

+Why does the gender pay gap grow with age?

The gap is small for workers in their twenties and widens after about 35 to 40, which the ONS largely attributes to the effect of motherhood. BLS found women aged 25 to 34 earned 88% of men's pay in 2024, against 77% to 81% for women 35 and older.
