Job Search Statistics 2026

This page collects current figures on what looking for a job involves: how long searches last, how many applications it takes to get an interview or an offer, how often candidates are ghosted, how job seekers use AI to write and send applications, and which job sites and channels produce interviews. Most figures cover the United States in 2026, with comparison points from Canada, the UK and the EU. Each figure links to the agency, research team or company that collected the data.

What the numbers say

Government data and platform data both show long searches. The Bureau of Labor Statistics put the median duration of unemployment at 11.9 weeks in October 2026 and the mean at 27.1 weeks, with 2.0 million people, or 27.6% of the unemployed, out of work for 27 weeks or more. Statistics Canada reported a similar long-term share of 23.7% the same month. Huntr, which tracks searches logged by its users, found the median time from starting a search to a first offer reached 102 days in Q3 2026, up from 78 days a year earlier, and 41% of the job seekers it surveyed had been looking for 10 months or more.

Sending more applications does not make up for a weak hit rate. Huntr users who logged 11 to 20 applications got interviews on 8.0% of them, against 2.4% for those who logged more than 100, and about two in three first offers came within 50 applications. Employers are drowning in volume: BambooHR counted roughly 95 applicants per posting in 2025, about double the 2021 level, while its hiring rate fell from 4.5% to 2.8%. Robert Half found 59% of unemployed job seekers name competition from too many applicants as a top challenge.

Silence is the most common complaint. Greenhouse found 31% of US candidates are often or almost always rejected without speaking to anyone, and ghosting was the most cited complaint among those who did interview. ResumeBuilder found 68% of recent graduates were ghosted after an interview and 34% had an accepted offer pulled, while 86% of recent job seekers say they have run into a posting they suspected was a ghost job. PeopleScout found fewer than one in 10 candidates had never been ghosted.

AI has become a standard part of the search, and it cuts both ways. Greenhouse reports 77% of US job seekers used AI in the past year, yet 39% have rewritten an application so it would not read as AI-generated. Huntr found 82% of surveyed job seekers have used a chatbot on their resume and 63% of those say it added something untrue. On the platform side, LinkedIn says more than 10 million members use its AI job search daily, and Huntr's data shows applications through Google job search and employer career sites get interviews at higher rates than LinkedIn and job boards.

What these figures suggest

Official statistics measure how long unemployed people have been looking, not how long a full search lasts, so they understate search length for people who look while still employed. The BLS median of 11.9 weeks is far below the 27.1 week mean because a minority of very long searches pulls the average up; more than a quarter of the unemployed have been looking for over six months. Huntr's 102 day figure comes from people who logged a first offer in its tracker, a group skewed toward white-collar and tech roles, so it is best read as a trend line rather than a national average.

What these figures suggest

Response rates fall as volume rises. Huntr's users who applied more selectively got interviews on about three times as many applications as those who sent more than 100, and most first offers came within 50 applications. Employer-side data from BambooHR explains why mass applying works poorly: postings attract twice as many applicants as in 2021 while a smaller share of applicants are hired. These are platform samples, not national surveys, so treat the ratios as directional.

What these figures suggest

Ghosting now happens at every stage: after applying, after interviewing and occasionally after an offer is accepted. Surveys define it differently, from no reply after an application to no reply after an interview, which explains much of the spread between figures. Suspected ghost jobs, postings that are not tied to a real opening, add to the problem, though they are self-reported suspicions rather than verified fake listings.

What these figures suggest

Most job seekers now use AI somewhere in the search, mainly to write or tailor resumes. The same surveys show the side effects: candidates worry about sounding generic, some try to game automated screening, and many report AI inserting details that are not true. Few job seekers want fully automated applying, and a large share of those who tried auto-apply tools have stopped.

Job boards remain the main way people apply, but the channel matters for results. What these figures suggest

Public opinion has turned more pessimistic about finding work, especially for young people, and many job seekers are lowering their pay expectations to land a role. Unemployment rates in the US, UK, Canada and EU remain moderate, so the strain shows up more in search length and response rates than in headline joblessness. Opinion surveys measure perception, which can move faster than labor market data.

About these figures

We selected figures published by the organization that collected the data: statistical agencies (BLS, Statistics Canada, ONS, Eurostat), the Pew Research Center, and companies reporting their own surveys or platform data (Huntr, Greenhouse, Criteria, PeopleScout, ResumeBuilder, Robert Half, Indeed, LinkedIn and BambooHR). Government figures measure how long unemployed people have been looking for work, which is not the same as the full length of a search, and they exclude people who search while employed. Platform data from Huntr and BambooHR reflects each company's users and customers, and company surveys use online panels with different sample sizes, countries and definitions of ghosting, so figures from different sources should not be compared directly. Glassdoor research pages could not be fetched for verification and are not included. Every quote was checked against the live source page in November 2026.

Every figure was taken from the publisher's own page, together with the sentence it appears in, and that sentence is re-checked against the source before each update. Where a survey covers a specific group, the figure says so. Read the methodology. Spotted a problem? Email editorial@mojolin.com.

Frequently asked questions

+How long does it take to find a job in 2026?

The median unemployed American had been looking for 11.9 weeks in October 2026, according to the BLS, but 27.6% had been searching for 27 weeks or more. Among Huntr users who landed an offer in Q3 2026, the median time from the start of the search to a first offer was 102 days.

+How many applications does it take to get a job?

Huntr found about two in three first offers came within 50 applications. Users who sent 11 to 20 applications got interviews on 8.0% of them, while those who sent more than 100 got interviews on just 2.4%, so a smaller number of targeted applications tends to work better than mass applying.

+How common is ghosting by employers?

Very common. ResumeBuilder found 68% of recent college graduates were ghosted after an interview, Huntr found 37% of job seekers say employers often stop responding after interviews, and PeopleScout found fewer than one in 10 candidates had never been ghosted.

+How many job seekers use AI to write applications?

Greenhouse found 77% of US job seekers used AI in their search in the past year, and Huntr found 82% of surveyed job seekers have used an AI chatbot on their resume. Criteria found 34% of candidates worldwide have used AI to apply for jobs, while only 5% of US job seekers would let an AI agent apply on its own, per Greenhouse.

+Which job sites get the most interviews?

In Huntr's tracking, applications through Google job search got interviews at 9.9% over the past year, against 3.6% on LinkedIn, and employer career sites outperformed job boards for the same people, 6.2% against 4.9%. LinkedIn and Indeed remain the largest platforms, with LinkedIn reporting more than 10 million daily users of its AI job search.
