Research overview
What the numbers say
Worker surveys agree that AI has moved into everyday work for a large minority of people. Gallup found 52% of US employees used AI at work at least a few times a year by May 2026, up from 21% in 2023, and the Real-Time Population Survey put work use of generative AI at about 41% of the workforce in late 2025. Regular use is the better measure of how embedded the tools are: 30% of employees used AI a few times a week and 15% daily. Pew's narrower question, whether at least some of your work is done with AI, produced only 16% in late 2024, which shows how much wording drives the headline number.
Business surveys give much lower figures, and the gap is mostly about who is counted. The Census Bureau found 19.8% of US firms using AI in 2026 and Eurostat found 19.95% of EU enterprises in 2025, but most firms are small and small firms adopt less. Weighted by employment, the Federal Reserve estimates 78% of the US labor force works at firms that have adopted AI. Inside companies, 47% of employees say their organization has integrated AI while only 25% say it has communicated a clear plan, and Microsoft found 78% of AI users bringing their own tools.
The productivity evidence splits into two layers. Task-level experiments show clear gains: customer support agents resolved 14% more issues per hour, with a 34% gain for novices, and consultants finished tasks within AI's reach 25.1% faster. Consultants using AI on a task outside its capabilities were 19% less likely to get it right. At the level of the whole economy, the St. Louis Fed estimates time savings of 1.4% of all work hours, and a study of Danish workers ruled out effects on earnings or hours larger than 2% two years after ChatGPT launched.
Sentiment is cautious rather than alarmed. Pew found 52% of US workers worried about AI's future impact at work and only 6% expecting more job opportunities, yet Gallup found just 15% think AI is likely to eliminate their own job within five years. Employers are moving on skills faster than on training: 66% of leaders told Microsoft they would not hire someone without AI skills, but only 39% of AI users had received training from their company. Watch usage intensity, training and job postings for AI roles as the next signals of how deep the change goes.

What these figures suggest
Between roughly 40% and 52% of US workers now use AI at work at least occasionally, depending on the survey and how it asks the question. Regular use is much lower: about 30% use it a few times a week and 15% daily, according to Gallup. Usage roughly doubled between 2023 and 2025 and kept climbing into 2026.

Economy-wide effects are much smaller so far: US workers saved about 1.4% of all work hours, and Danish data show no measurable change in earnings or hours. About these figures
Figures come from worker surveys (Gallup, Pew Research Center, the Real-Time Population Survey reported by the Federal Reserve), business surveys (U.S. Census Bureau, Eurostat, Statistics Canada), peer-reviewed or working-paper productivity studies (NBER, Harvard Business School), and usage reports published by Microsoft and Anthropic, and every quote was checked against the publisher's page. Adoption rates vary widely because surveys ask different questions, count firms or workers, and weight results differently. Company reports describe their own users or survey panels and are not representative of all workers, so compare trends rather than exact levels across sources.
Every figure was taken from the publisher's own page, together with the sentence it appears in, and that sentence is re-checked against the source before each update. Where a survey covers a specific group, the figure says so. Read the methodology. Spotted a problem? Email editorial@mojolin.com.
